Greetings. If I were you I'd check out the player guides section of this site. There is quite a bit of useful info there.
As for the game itself, you'd need to be a bit more specific on what kind of help you need. If you have any specific questions feel free to ask, and I'll try my best to answer them.
I would hold off on buying any equipment for a bit. You can use a custom profile from the moment you unlock it, but you'll quickly outlevel some of the gear, and want to replace it with better equipment. I think using a class just makes things easier initially.
If you have a premium/deluxe and some spare gold bars I think the Seeker Mk 4. could do you some good. It allows you to get loot after matches, but you are a lot less likely to get good loot with it if you don't have a deluxe/premium. If not don't fret. Its not required by any means; its just nice.
Dr. Septimus's guide on Gold Bar Purchases would give you some good advice too.
Finally, if you see someone who takes very little damage the reason why would most likely be boosts. Boosts in this game offer a wide array of buffs, and used in certain combinations can be quite nasty. Figuring out how to counter various setups is something you'll figure out over time.

Tip 1: Earning Money. There are many ways to have a steady income, I find it best to complete Jobs and missions*as well as selling the contents of Containers**. Simply playing a match(PvE earns less than PvP) can make you a quick buck, especially with Membership.
Tip 2: Respect. If you want any respect in this game(Not "rep", player respect), do not do the following; Beg for Items or Money. Flood chat window with useless, obnoxious statements(i.e; "looking for gang looking for gang"...etc).
Tip 3: Gear. As Thoughtfulmoron said, do not worry about the Custom Class untill you've reached a sufficient level(I say 30 or higher), It'll be nothing but a waste of Money. Stay with the pre-set Classes, and don't forget to upgrade the Rank. I recommend the Soldier Class for being well-rounded.
Tip 4: Professions. You can only have ONE profession at the start of the game, don't make the mistake of buying a 2nd as it will overwrite the first.
*-You can receive a job from any Payphone around the city(lobby), aswell as missions from NPCs.
**-Equipped with a profession(Chem., Engineer, Tailor, or Gunsmith) Mk.(1-4) you can collect Containers from Stockpile or any PvE match(drops off Destroyers and Hammers).
Enjoy the Game :)
