Get to know where the scavenger venders are (look on the map) and go to them often. There is 1 in each of the districts and they each sell different stuff. They change what they have every 30 min or so. They can provide you with some nice things if you are lucky.
I would recommend finding a pre made class that you like and sticking with it for a little while. Save up your money. Of course you will need to rank it up a few levels and that will cost some but for the most part the class setups are a great way to save money. Worry about your custom profile later. Custom profiles can be very good but they can also be extremely expensive.
Free to play can be done but if you really like the game and you know you are going to be playing it I would get the Premium membership. Even if you do not plan on getting it every month having it to start with will be more help than you can imagine.
Another great way to get help is to join an active gang. A gang can help provide you with all sorts of things not to mention some people to party up with and play as a team. Having a good good group is key. Also get to know the other players. We are a reasonably small community so get to know the players that are on a lot. If you become friends they can help provide you with things as well but more importantly they can help provide you with information. I do give the developers credit for trying but many things in this game are poorly explained. Having people who know what they are doing to ask your questions will make a huge difference in how well you do.
Keep utilizing the forums and good luck. Welcome to the community.
