This issue is more an OS/DirectX issue than a game detection issue. Laptop manufacturers use different methods connecting the touchpad to the motherboard. Some use a USB interface and some use the old PS/2. PS/2 is typically detected first by BIOS. USB detection usually is one of the last things to be detected. With that which device that gets detected first is based on what "channel" the USB device is connected. This all leads to how Windows detects and "ranks" each device in the device resource lists and how the driver for that hardware is configured (some mice are detected as a generic HID, while others are detected as Mouse) which then gets pasted to DirectX.
For example, I have several USB input devices on my computer, USB PS3 controller, USB Nostromo n50, USB wireless keyboard, PS/2 wired keyboard, PS/2 wired mouse and sometimes a wireless mouse. Based on where it is connected on the motherboard a game will detect certain input devices as the controller. If possible, try to hook up your mouse to the PS/2 port or a USB port #1 to get the best chance of proper detection by DirectX.
Otherwise, you may have to stick to disabling the touchpad before you enter the game. There used to be a utility that allowed you to change the DirectX device order, but I don't have it anymore and I'm not sure whether it would still work.
Hope that helps in understanding what's going on...

I just knew there would be repercussions for not taking Computer Science higher-level options at University!
Heh, anyhoo... Thanks for enlightening me on the connectivity technical knowhow. It wasn't a major issue for me, but others may have/will experience it so hopefully this thread may help more players in the future.
Your set-up is making me blush with embaressment. All I have is an Xbox 360 wireless gamepad, a G15 logitech keyboard and a corded Asus G2 mouse. ![]()

I'm not entirely sure this warrants a thread, but I thought I would go ahead and post this in any case.
A newcomer just mentioned he had experienced 'Mouse Lag' upon first entering the game. His solution .. "Go into the options, game tab, and enable Use Hardware Mouse Cursor and then it was instantly fixed."
This is all well and good. However this reminded me of my first experience with this. I play CC from a laptop & corded mouse. I therefore tend to deactivate my touchpad to prevent accidently moving the cursor. I found that should I even attempt to use the touchpad at all, the game becomes unplayably laggy, whilst my corded mouse is faultless.
BUT - Once or twice I've found the situation inversed: the touchpad navigates the game perfectly whilst the corded mouse recreates unplayable laggy movement. My only solution is to quit and restart via the CC launcher.
I'm sure this isn't a major problem, and likely something to do with the order I plug in my mouse or deactivate my touchpad on thee occasions, but it's still an infrequent annoyance that may be solved with minor hardcoding? What do I know.
Perhaps adding this potential issue into the knowledgebase>technical may be all that's required.
